Tata Institute of Social Sciences Reverses Layoffs, Rehires Nearly 100 Staff

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is back in the news as it laid off tens of employees in a single go in July. This announcement was posted to the official website on June 28 was recently updated.

The recent press release from Tata Institute of Social Sciences states that the contract termination of 55 faculty members and 60 non-teaching staff extends to four campuses. It also clarified that the laid off employees were hired by the Tata Education Trust (TET) on a “contractual basis for specific program durations.”

The latest update states that “there has been a positive development regarding the release of funds from TET”. Based on the updated press release from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, “there is an ongoing discussions with the Tata Education Trust have provided assurance that resources will be made available to TISS to resolve this issue.”

The letter numbered “Admn/5(1) TET-Faculty & Staff/2024, dated 28th June 2024, addressed to all concerned TET Programme faculty and non-teaching staff, is hereby withdrawn with immediate effect.”

The fired employees have been requested to continue their work, and salaries will be released as soon as the TET Support Grant is received by the institute.
